Enhancing Performance-Based Seismic Design through RC Column Jacketing
A Pathway to Improved Structural Safety

Enhancing the seismic resilience of existing buildings in earthquake-prone regions is a critical priority for reducing collapse risks and safeguarding human life. Reinforced concrete (RC) column jacketing has become one of the most widely applied retrofitting techniques for improving the structural behavior of deficient columns. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of RC jacketing in enhancing the structural performance level of buildings in accordance with the ASCE/SEI 41-17 guidelines. A pushover analysis was conducted to assess the impact of concrete jacketing on key performance indicators, including plastic hinge rotation capacity, story displacement, and inter-story drift. The results demonstrate significant improvements in the ductile response of structural elements, accompanied by noticeable reductions in both displacement and drift values. These findings underscore the pivotal role of column strengthening within seismic retrofit strategies and offer practical insights for engineers and architects seeking to enhance the safety and reliability of vulnerable structures.
